Mehri Dadgar, a professional artist and teacher, was arrested in Tehran as a young woman for passing out pro-democracy newsletters during earlier protests against the Islamic regime. As punishment, she spent five years in an Iranian women's political prison, a stark foreshadowing of what may await recently arrested protesters
After her release, she attended the Art School of Iran, immigrated to the U.S., and become an American citizen.
In Iran, Ms. Dadgar learned an appreciation of Western art and literature through her studies. In her presentations she hopes to promote understanding and tolerance of the Middle East and Islam in the same way: through an examination of its rich artistic heritage. She''ll reveal the source of many misconceptions about the Islamic world, including those that relate to art.
In light of recent events in Tehran this should be an informative and fascinating evening. The works of art on her website are also striking.
