Philip Krohn will spend a week in Gallery 111 in the ICB Building in Sausalito prior to the opening of this event, creating an installation built from hundreds of wood scraps, stickers and strapping salvaged from the trash bins of local lumber yards.
Krohn's specialty is building structures and installations out of common elements from the waste stream, typically wood, paper and plastic. Apart from the elements that artists will appreciate in his work, as lay people we appreciate the inherent thought his pieces suggest: if you can do that much with materials that people throw away, why are they throwing it away?
Krohn also created the EARTHâ„¢ bumper-sticker to help support non-profit work supporting biodiversity and wilderness preservation. He is the founder of WOW Farm, a high-yield market farm which grows organic produce for West Oakland residents. In 1993 he founded Orlo, a non-profit organization based in Portland, Oregon that produces arts programs focused on environmental issues.
