The Avon Walk for Breast Cancer is an annual non-competitive fundraising event sponsored by the Avon Foundation for Women. The Avon Foundation distributes funds raised at the Avon Walks for Breast Cancer to an array of local organizations to advance access to care and to help find a cure for breast cancer. They place a special emphasis on serving the needs of the medically underserved.
There are nine Avon Walks held across the country every year (although of course we think that we have the most beautiful route since it passes through Sausalito!) In 2009, the more than 2,800 walkers at the Avon Walk San Francisco raised $6 million, which was in turn was used to benefit Bay Area organizations.
You can always do shorter segments, but this year walkers will cover up to 26.2 miles on Saturday, and 13.1 miles on Sunday for a total of either a marathon or a marathon-and-a-half over the weekend. Walkers will be supported by an all-volunteer team along the course throughout the weekend.
The walk will come through Sausalito on Saturday after a kickoff celebration at Fort Mason in San Francisco.
Even if you don't walk or volunteer, please do a favor for all of us whose lives have been affected by breast cancer: if you're on Bridgeway that day and see the walkers, please cheer and applaud for them. (OK, if you're driving, come to a full stop first!) We want them to feel our support here in Sausalito.
To sign up as a walker or as a volunteer support crew member, visit the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer website, where you can also donate to the cause. Detailed information about cheering stations will be available in the weeks prior to the event... and you can even cheer at unofficial cheering stations as well!
We'll keep you updated as we learn more, but for this important cause we wanted to get the word out now. Breast cancer has struck in our families, and the odds are far too high that it has struck your family, too.
