Fast Forward SummaryTM: Located at the northern edge of Sausalito, Tommy's Wok is the most popular Chinese restaurant in town. Their BBQ rice dishes (we like the pork-fried rice) are fabulous, with real (very lean) meat. Tender, juicy meat in both chicken dishes we had on our last visit. They focus on fresh organic ingredients and use no MSG. Be prepared to pay more per main dish ($11.50 - $22.50) than you might pay at a good Chinese restaurant elsewhere in Marin. If you come in on the Ferry, their location is outside of walking distance from downtown, so a visit requires an extra leg by taxi.
Tommy's Wok: The Details
Tommy's Wok is located in a small strip mall on Bridgeway near Sausalito's northern border, where the restaurant draws a mostly local clientele. On the last several dishes we've had at Tommy's Wok the meat has been tender and included moist large chunks (especially the chicken), and tasted fabulous compared to the smaller, drier, overcooked pieces of meat you so often get. The vegetables were fresh and not overcooked.
If you're a fan of BBQ fried rice (and we are), Tommy's Wok turns this boring staple of Chinese restaurants into a wonderful set of dishes. We treat the BBQ pork-fried rice with the respect due a dinner course, not as a side dish as you would at most places. The pieces of meat are think, flavorful and lean, not the table scraps you usually see in these dishes.
The architect has made the strip-mall location into a gleaming and pleasant dining room that is much classier on the interior than the building's exterior suggests. It's too bad the counter in front of the open kitchen is so high, because being able to see more of the food preparatioon would be fun.
This place also gets the prize for best restaurant aquarium in the county, a reef tank that will entrance the adults as well as the kids.
