Alcatraz
Clearly visible in the Bay from the shores of Sausalito, Alcatraz Island has filled a number of roles in American history.
Although it is most famous for having been the site of "the prison from which no one could escape," Alcatraz Island has also been the site of a Civil War era American fort designed to defend the Bay.
