Muir Woods Parking
Insiders Tip: From spring through autumn we strongly recommend taking the Muir Woods Shuttle bus if you’re not going up the mountain very early in the morning. Parking can be time-consuming, distant and frustrating… just the opposite of the calm serenity people come to Muir Woods to enjoy. Our easy to read version of the Muir Woods Shuttle schedule and calendar is here.
Where can you park at Muir Woods? The parking lot at Muir Woods is small and the crowds are big. If you plan to drive — especially on weekends — come very very early in the morning if you want to make sure you get a spot.
There is a small overflow lot down the road from the main lot, but it also fills up rapidly. As one friend put it, “The car in front of us got the last space in the regular lot. By the time we decided what to do and got to the overflow lot we barely got the last space there! What, did cars teleport in front of us?”
People do park on the access road outside the gates, but on crowded days we see people walking over a mile to reach the Muir Woods entrance. This is also a safety issue since the road was not designed for cars to park here, people walking to the park with kids wander into traffic lanes and drivers may be distracted.
