The Best Hotels in Sausalito
November, 2009 -- What are the best hotels in Sausalito? Each month we survey a wide range of blogs, travel sites, online forums and ratings sites, then summarize and interpret the data to create this ranking of Sausalito hotels.
There are only five hotels in Sausalito, and the four Downtown hotels are all within walking distance of the San Francisco ferry. To give you a wider price range we include the closest hotels in Mill Valley.
Two less expensive no-frills motels are included for visitors willing to accept the tradeoffs of budget lodging. There is a 20+ points score difference in consumer satisfaction with these motels compared to local hotels.
Note: Many computer-moderated sites list hotels like Water's Edge and Tiburon Lodge as being very close to Sausalito. They are... if you're traveling by boat! By car they're a long drive around the edge of Richardson Bay. If Sausalito is the focus of your trip, do not stay in Tiburon.

Note: The Alta Mira Hotel, once the Grand Dame of Sausalito, is (sadly) no longer in operation, and the facility is now a rehab hospital. Many computer-moderated sites continue to list it as a hotel. Since our site is people-moderated by editors who know Sausalito well, we are protected against such mistakes.
How to interpret our numbers:
Hotels are ranked by total Online Experience IndexTM. The top hotel for the month ALWAYS is given a score of 100, and all other hotels then receive a score "graded on the curve" of the top rated hotel.
We also list the "Heat" for each hotel, which signifies the amount of attention being paid to that business on the web. The highest Heat rating is automatically adjusted to 1000 and all other hotels are graded on that curve. The score is weighted to emphasize recent online activity. A hotel with a Heat Rating of 500 is generating twice as much online attention as one with a rating of 250.
