Radio Sausalito Takes on Mantel of Emergency Broadcast System

City of Sausalito Disaster Hotline:  415-289-4151     Radio: AM 1610

Sausalito City Disaster Preparedness Website is Here with extensive information on all aspects of emergency services and disaster preparedness.

Action Item:  Sausalito Police Sgt. William Fraass, Emergency Services Manager, works to provide disaster training in the community and to coordinate with officials at the County, Sta te and Federal level.  He is available by appointment to meet with neighborhood, community or business groups to cover these important issues and teach the key requirements of disaster preparation.  For more information or to schedule a meeting you can
reach Sgt. Fraass at bfraass@ci.sausalito.ca.us or 415-289-4100, x657.

Some ideas are so smart that they just jump out at you the moment you hear them.  Radio Sausalito and the City of Sausalito have just hatched one such genius-in-a-bottle plan.  The local station, playing “Foot Stompin’ Jazz” and community programming on AM 1610 in Sausalito, is now also the home of Sausalito’s new Emergency Broadcast System.

In emergencies such as earthquakes, winter storms, widespread power outages, large fires and police emergencies Sausalito public safety personnel can access the studios of Radio Sausalito to relay critical information to Sausalito residents.  Although the station operates on a number of small “relay transmitters” that allow it to reach each valley of Sausalito with only a low-power signal, in an emergency the station can actually broadcast at an even greater power to ensure good signal strength through the “repeaters”.

Now when you assign 1610 AM to a button on your car radio you’re not only linking in to Sausalito’s community radio station, you’re also making sure you’re ready if there’s ever an emergency.

We applaud the City of Sausalito, Sgt. Fraass and the Sausalito Police and Southern Marin Fire Depts., as well as Jonathan Westerling and the other volunteers of Radio Sausalito for this important and common-sense plan.
