Ride a Tall Ship in a Real Schooner Race August 29

Date: Saturday, August 29, 2009

Time: 10:00 AM – 8:00 PM (or earlier if you skip reception & arrange own transportation back from Belvedere).

Place: Schoonmaker Point Marina, 85 Liberty Ship Way, Sausalito (see map below)

Price: $75, plus you must be (or become) a member of the Spaulding Wooden Boat Center (costs $20-$35 for individual, $50 for family, . Additional $20 for BBQ after sail. $75 cost includes a light lunch and beverages.

The Golden Gate Tall Ships Society has created a special program for members of the Spaulding Wooden Boat Center, with an activity so cool and unique that we think you may want to (do something noble and) join the Spaulding Center to gain access.

The Gas Light (pictured at left, photo from the Spaulding Center) is a replica of the schooners that were typical ships of San Francisco Bay in the 19th century. Starting at Schoonmaker Point Marina in Sausalito at 10:00 AM, participants will get to ride along as The Gas Light joins the 11:00 AM parade of schooners down Raccoon Strait, followed by a pursuit race at noon starting off the Knox Buoy. After the race a no-host BBQ with live music and free beer will take place at the San Francisco Yacht Club in Belvedere. The BBQ food costs $20 (payable in cash).

If you don't want to stay for the barbeque you can arrange your own transportation back to Sausalito from Belvedere. After the party Gas Light will return to Schoonmaker Cove Marina at about 8:00 PM.
