Postal Service Plans Consolidation of Some Sausalito Services: Beginning of the End?

We normally leave the conspiracy theories to other publications, but the recent request for comments from the Postal Service on moving Sausalito’s commercial mail dropoff to Mill Valley (reproduced below) seems to us like much more than a routine government quest for efficiency.

The folks who participate in the Historic Landmarks and Trees and Views meetings over the years know that there’s a trick owners use when trying to get rid of something that other people are trying to protect.  You cut off limbs or remove recognizable features one at a time over a period of years.  Eventually the things that made the tree or building special are all gone, and it’s easy to say, “It’s old, rotten and ugly, we should just take it all down and start over.”

Is the USPS doing the same thing to the Sausalito Post Office, stripping away functions until it’s a stump that someone just needs to dig out and discard?  We used the Sausalito Post Office twice today, and going to Mill Valley would have been impractical.  Are we being too cynical?

We’ll leave that up to you to evaluate.  Here’s the press release and address for comment (courtesy of Sausalito City website, and kudos to the City for jumping on this):

US Postal Service to conduct a Business Mail Entry Unit Study for mail arrival and acceptance at the Sausalito Post Office

The United States Postal Service intends to conduct a Business Mail Entry Unit (BMEU) study of mail arrival and acceptance at the Sausalito Post Office for possible consolidation into the Mill Valley Business Mail Entry located at 751 E. Blithedale Avenue, Mill Valley.

The Postal Service is facing one of the most difficult challenges in history. They have advised that they must realign their network to match their resources with mail volume. They further advise that consolidating some postal operations and placing their people where needed makes logical business sense given the economic realities.

To that end, the Postal Service is soliciting public input as part of the study process. All comments received by April 10, 2013 will be fully considered in any decision. Submit your comments to:
