June 5, 2024 — A boat sits wedged in the Highway 101 underpass at the north end of Sausalito, with its OVERSIZE LOAD escort looking on.
I sought to sail free!
Narrow minds constrained my dreams.
Walls are closing in!
It’s not clear from this photo, but a very large truck was pulling this very large boat when it entered the not-very-wide eastbound underpass on Donohue St. at the north end of Sausalito on Wednesday.
The truck, the boat or both then started to scrape the pillars, bringing their journey to a sudden halt and blocking one of the two lanes under the highway on the way into town. Traffic backed up onto the southbound Highway 101 offramp as cars reluctantly merged into the right lane and gawked at the super-yacht-in-the-bathtub scene. The westbound lane on Donahue that leads to the 101 South onramp wasn’t affected.
By the afternoon all was right again, but one of our editor’s aunts put it best: “Why would you truck a big boat here instead of sailing it?” The fact that Arizona license plates adorn the escort car suggests some possible answers.
I’m sure they thought they had a good answer to this when they started their journey, and a few years down the road they will find all of this to be funny. But this was not a good day for the transport team.
