Two Marine Mammal Benefits Thurs. May 7

Photo Credit: Teddy Llovet.  This image of sea lions sleeping at Morro Bay won the Sierra Club’s Daily Ray of Hope award.  The pups do not stay with their mothers like this for long, and overfishing means that often they cannot find enough to eat on their own and are found in distress on a beach.  And we all knows who comes to help when people call…

Two Marine Mammal Center Events Coming on Thursday, May 7

Sausalito’s own Marine Mammal Center is not just a local treasure, but an organization that benefits the entire Pacific Coast.  They rescue, rehabilitate and release a number of different species of injured or malnourished marine mammals each year, from sea lions to harbor seals to dolphins, and many of the animals they help represent threatened or endangered species.  Perhaps even more importantly, they have wonderful education programs so that we can all be part of making the shoreline a better place for marine mammals… and for those semi-marine mammals called humans.

This year the Marine Mammal Center has asked local businesses to hold special events to help raise money to help their “Dollar-a-Pound” campaign to feed this year’s crop of animals in need.  Two of those events are coming up this Thursday, May 7.

West Marine Raises Funds for Seals

From 9:30 AM – 3:00 PM on Thursday May 7 you can visit West Marine at 295 Harbor Drive in Sausalito (map below), enjoy a barbeque and meet staff members and volunteers from the Marine Mammal Center.  Best of all, they’ll donate 5% of proceeds from sales on May 7 to the Marine Mammal Center.  Don’t own a boat?  They have a wide variety of clothing, gifts and fishing gear as well.   Three cheers for West Marine for giving back to the community during a tough economic year for retailers!

Art for Seals

No, we’re not talking about the stickers at Pinestreet Papery!  From 6:30 to 9:00 PM on Thursday, May 7 you can complete your Marine Mammal Center Festivities at the opening reception for “Surface”, a surf art and photography exhibition of the work of Brown Cannon III.  Proceeds from sales of Cannon’s striking work will benefit both the Richardson Bay Audubon Center & Sanctuary and The Marine Mammal Center.  The reception will be held at Lyford House, headquarters of the Richardson Bay Audubon Center, 376 Greenwood Beach Road in Tiburon (map below).  Call (415) 388-2524 or send an email to richardsonbay@audubon.org for more information.  And give Brown Cannon a big round of applause for his donation!
