Caledonia Street Parking

How to park at night without getting an expensive ticket!

Caledonia St. has a wide array of restaurants and bars, and when you’re frantically looking for parking it’s easy to get a ticket if you don’t check out all the posted signs. This also applies if you’re attending a meeting at Sausalito City Hall or visiting the library in the same building.

The special restrictions were created by the city because the residential areas up the hill from Caledonia St. were being filled with visitors’ cars, leaving the locals with no place to park. Here’s what you need to know to have a good time:

Caledonia Street’s parking spaces (and on the side streets between Caledonia and Bridgeway) is mostly free, and divided between 2-hour and 20-minute zones. In these spots just check the signs next to your chosen spot and you should be OK.

Parking on any street that runs uphill from Caledonia (or parallel to Caledonia farther up the hill) is restricted to residents. Signs will confirm these rules.

All of the adjacent hillside neighborhoods are a no parking zone at night for visitors. It’s a sure-thing parking ticket unless you’re a resident (see sign above). The system that ran from 2017-2024 that included some residential blocks where 2-hour parking was OK during some hours has now been dropped due to congestion. That’s why we all have to double check the signs.

There’s free parking in the narrow lot on Locust at Bridgeway, near the Bay.  Locust also crosses Caledonia so you can follow it down to reach that lot, which is next to the Bay shoreline.

New: Special update from Sausalito Police on car break-ins and how to prevent them.

The northernmost (and least expensive) of the downtown city parking lots has its northern tip at the foot of Johnson St. just south of the Caledonia area. If everything else is packed (which is very rare) you can park here. Johnson is also a cross street of Caledonia.  See our Guide to Parking in Sausalito for more information.

The Google Map below is interactive and will let you explore the area.  It shows a closeup of the satellite image of the parking lot where you can park for free at the foot of Locust St.  where it widens to become the parking lot.
