Radio Sausalito Expands its Coverage — From Studios to Cable to the IJ

We always love to hear the stories where unselfish people tirelessly serve their communities for years, and then finally get support and recognition for their work.

That’s been the case this year for Jonathan Westerling and Radio Sausalito, which recently moved into beautiful new physical studios donated by Sausalito resident Gilbert Purcell. The station — which started operations a decade ago in Westerling’s closet — now has a modern studio, an island of Foot Stompin’ Jazz  with its own entrance inside Purcell’s Sausalito hillside home.

On our tour of the new facilities with Westerling, the word that came to mind as we entered the brick-walled studio was “classy.”  And we also got some needed exercise climbing the hill from Bridgeway!

As the source of Radio Sausalito has gotten a great new home, so has the signal.  Comcast Cable Channel 26 now carries the station to all of Marin — just choose the SAP function to get the alternate audio for the channel.  This is a huge expansion of the station’s audience after years of fighting petty bureaucratic obstacles, and a big win for all of us here in Sausalito.

It’s a win that’s especially important since Radio Sausalito serves as the town’s local emergency broadcast system in the event of a disaster.

The OurSausalito.com crew think that this is all well-deserved recognition for Westerling and the many volunteers of Radio Sausalito.  We all owe a great debt of gratitude to the Purcell family for their fabulous support, and to Comcast for carrying our station.

Most importantly, we’d like to give a Standing-O to Jonathan Westerling and the Radio Sausalito volunteers for years of unselfish service to this community that produced the foundation for the successes of 2010.
