Local Jazz Singer Natalie John Returns from NY at the No Name Bar July 9

Date:  Thursday, July 9, 8:30 PM

Place:  No Name Bar, 757 Bridgeway, Sausalito

As you know, we always “cheer for the home team” when it comes to Sausalito, Marin and Bay Area people.

23 year old jazz vocalist Natalie John is a Marin native who has made the jump to New York City in pursuit of her career as a vocalist, composer and arranger.  She presents an inclusive set of original jazz, folk and rock music as well as jazz and pop standards.  At the No Name she’ll be backed by the talented ensemble Scott Thompson, electric bass; Michael Davis, drums; and Maya Kronfeld, keyboards.

Natalie created the Natalie John Quartet in 2007, along with then-classmates at the New School for Jazz in New York’s Greenwich Village.  They plan on a debut album of original music in 2009.

After graduating from high school here in Marin, Natalie enrolled in the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California in 2003.   While there she studied jazz with Tierney Sutton, Shelly Berg, Alan Pasqua and others. She transferred to the New School University in 2006 to study with Joe Chambers, Junior Mance and the New School music faculty.

Prior to earning her bachelors degree in fine arts from the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in the fall of 2007, she was selected for the 2005 John Coltrane Foundation Scholarship and the 2006 annual Downbeat Student Music Award for best college jazz vocalist.

At age 19, Natalie was a featured artist at the 2005 Festival Jazz en Lima, and in 2008 she was accepted both to the Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead artist residency at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and to the Banff International Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music, led by Dave Douglas

Natalie also writes, performs and arranges for several other NYC-based groups: KT Chauvot’s Collective Pursuit (8-piece ensemble playing original contemporary music); Marty Isenberg Big Band (playing originals and cool arrangements of standards); Joe Abba and Travis Sullivan’s Identity Crisis (original funky soul).

The No Name recently celebrated its 50th birthday as a jazz venue with a celebrity jam session.
