Fish and Chips of Sausalito
Don't be confused by all the signs: This fast-food place causes more name confusion than any other spot in Sausalito. Although it is one small restaurant, it has three signs that hang over the sidewalk in front of three separate doors with three different brass numbers, one each reading "Hamburgers," "Fish and Chips" and "Ice Cream" (see photo at left):
-- The "Ice Cream" door on the left does lead to a Lappert's Ice Cream Counter (and the whole restaurant is in fact owned by ice cream entrepreneur Michael Lappert) but a stand-alone Lappert's Ice Cream shop is only a long city block south on Bridgeway and offers greater varieties of choice.
-- The Fish and Chips door in the middle leads to the counter where you can (surprise!) order fish and chips, along with other breaded and deep-fried goodies.
-- The "Hamburgers" door on the right leads into the tiny dining room, and confuses people trying to find Hamburgers Restaurant a block farther south on Bridgeway -- Hamburgers doesn't sell Fish and Chips, and for the same price they sell far better hamburgers. In fact, despite the confusing signs Fish and Chips doesn't sell regular hamburgers at all, just "sliders."
Fast Forward SummaryTM: All this means that we have written a long instructive essay to unravel this marketing confusion before we ever get to tell you about the fish and chips at Fish and Chips! For $7.95 they're pretty good fast food fare and better than you might expect to be served over a high-tourist-volume counter. (In my travels around the world I've paid far more and gotten less quality, including the ones at a couple of pubs in England.) That said, if you're looking for a memorable sit-down meal, a number of other restaurants in town have excellent fish and chips on the menu, albeit at $5 to $15 more than you'll pay here. To quote one of our editors, "If Hamburgers is The Grill of Sausalito, 'Fish and Chips' is its Deep Fryer."
