Golden Gate Market Deli
Fast Forward SummaryTM: For tired bike riders and walkers who are crossing the Golden Gate Bridge on bikes or who are walking from the Golden Gate to Sausalito, this is the first little market and deli you come to in Sausalito. It's only a few blocks past the Golden Gate Market to Downtown Sausalito, but we've seen lots of walkers and bike riders stagger inside in a desperate search for food and water.
Fortunately, the little deli in the left rear corner of the store makes excellent sandwiches, and the people there are very nice. (It's ubnusual for a deli tucked into a little market to earn a spot on our "Best Casual Restaurants" list, as they did in Winter, 2012.) The deli is in the left rear corner of the store, and the guys who make the sandwiches are pleasant and responsive to your requests, even when they get very busy.
The market itself is not cheap, but it's not as bad as some resort and beach town markets we've been to. A lot of the residents of Old Town and Hurricane Gulch (the nickname for this neighborhood) see Golden Gate Market as an institution.
Don't be confused by street names: Golden Gate Market sits on a four block stretch of the main road through Sausalito that most people think of as Bridgeway, but which is actually 2nd St. Don't think you've got the wrong place just because of the address. This is the first little market you see on Bridgeway as you first drive into Sausalito from the Golden Gate Bridge, sitting on the corner where the road turns right to run along the edge of the Bay and the view opens up and takes your breath away.
