Sartaj India Cafe was closed for remodeling for over a year after a fire and its subsequent sale to the local restaurateurs behind the Lotus Cuisine of India restaurants, headquartered in San Rafael. This experiment did not work, and the original owners returned to manage the restaurant as part of the Lotus family.
