The Golden Gate Bridge District will hold public meetings in late July and early August to get feedback on a proposal to realign Golden Gate Transit Routes 70, 80 and 101.

The core of the plan is that Route 80's trips and stops would be re-assigned to routes 70, and 101.  Route 80 would then be eliminated, but in theory its riders would really just be changing the number on the front of the bus and not lose any service since the same trips would be added to the other routes. The plan adds one Route 70 trip and thirteen Route 101 trips on weekdays, and adds 26 trips each on Routes 70 and 101 on weekend days.

Under the plan the District says that the routing will be more efficient, making service better rather than worse after the elimination of Route 80.

Routes 70, 80, and 101 link San Francisco, Marin County, and Sonoma County:

– Route 70 links San Francisco and Novato via Sausalito;

— Route 80 links San Francisco and Santa Rosa via Sausalito

— Route 101 links San Francisco and Santa Rosa, with limited stops in Marin including the Spencer Ave. bus pad in Sausalito.

All three of the routes have overlapping service:; Routes 70 and 80 overlap in San Francisco and Marin; and Routes 80 and 101 overlap inside Sonoma County.

Route 101 was created in 2009 as a faster weekday express because Route 80 had so many stops that it took 3 hours to travel from Sonoma County to San Francisco. Since then passenger counts on Route 101 have steadily increased, while they've steadily decreased on Route 80.

Having studied the bus routes fanatically to build our reference pages on bus stops and routes in Sausalito, the key issue we see is ensuring thaty the late night Route 80 bus service from Sausalito to San Francisco is maintained under Route 70's name. That service is critical to Sausalito restaurant workers who live in the City but have to work late here, and who have no other way to get home after the ferries stop running..

If approved, the changes would be implemented on December 14, 2014.

The local meeting will be held Wednesday, July 23, 4:00 – 6:00 PM at the Marin City Senior Center, 640 Drake Ave, Marin City.  Other meetings are being held in cities farther north in the following week.

If you can't make it to the meeting, comments can be emailed to publichearing@goldengate.org, or via paper mail to Amorette Ko-Wong, Secretary of the District, PO Box 9000, Presidio Station, San Francisco, CA 94129-0601. The deadline is 4:30 PM on August 1, 2014.
