Views from Sausalito: We Took the Stairs

When walking, sometimes you take a detour from your usual path.  If you see a long stairway, but can’t quite see what’s at the end of it, you may hesitate.  The steps could lead to someone’s house or… a gateway to another area to be explored.

Last night we got lucky, and took some stairs up to a street that looked and felt like something from a world gone by.  Complete with old stone walls covered in moss, narrow, shaded passageways, driveway arches built into stone and only large enough for the smallest Fiat to squeeze through.

Looking between the hedges and through the glass doors and windows of these fabulous houses we could see the waterfront below.  I was jealous of the cars that are parked in these open-air driveways — they seem to have the best views of all!

Thanks to instant navigation, we found the Star of the Sea Catholic Church that we’d wanted to visit nearby.  It was yet another magical discovery. The rectory is home to the Priests, whose rewards for daily prayer include living in this magnificent location.  We heard organ music from inside, but were too shy to enter.  Another time, another stairway.

We wound our way down to Bridgeway to find Salsalito Taco Shop, the taco stand recommended to us by Janet at the Visitor Center, who is a 37-year resident of Sausalito.

Eating the Baja tacos, listening to the Mexican music and feeling the breeze from the Bay, we could have been in Mazatlan — but we were home, in our kind of town, Sausalito.
