Insider Tips: Sausalito Bike Return Service for Rental Bikes

Thousands of people ride rental bikes across the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito each year and then ride the Sausalito ferry back to San Francisco. The ride has incredible views, not to mention good exercise and the chance to have some great food in Sausalito.
The one downside to the Golden Gate Bridge bike ride is that it’s a hassle to stand in the bike line waiting for the ferry, stow your bike at the back of the boat, go back and find it when you get to San Francisco, and then ride back to the shop where you rented it.
From late spring through the end of summer, there’s a great way to avoid this hassle: the Sausalito Bike Return. Located just inside the ferry parking lot at the corner of Anchor St. and Humboldt St. (see map below) it’s just one short block to the left of the ferry pier (as you stand facing the water), and in their inaugural year of 2017 it cost just $10 per bike to skip all the hassles of returns and have them truck your bike back to the rental shop in San Francisco.
I know how I’d feel if I were in Paris near the Louvre, my hotel was just across the Seine, and I’d rented a bike from a place over by the Eiffel Tower. After a long day of riding I’d want to rest before going out to a nice dinner on the Left Bank that night, and I would jump at the chance to skip the ride down to the Eiffel Tower and the long walk or expensive taxi ride back to our hotel.
For me it’s the difference between ending a great afternoon with a scoop of ice cream or ending a great afternoon cleaning the kitchen.
Note: I took the photo above of the bike parking area and the sign for the Sausalito Bike Return service early one beautiful summer morning. A few hours later that peaceful-looking parking area was full of bikes!
