Should We Honeymoon in San Francisco or Sausalito?
The ferry connections and the proximity of the Golden Gate Bridge make Sausalito a viable home base for a week-long honeymoon, since it serves as a great jump-off point for spending some days in San Francisco, some days here, and more time in the GGNRA or the Wine Country.
The key to deciding on the right home base for your honeymoon is “What mood do you want, and what kinds of things will you be doing at night?”
Do you want the edgy energy of a big city? Stay in San Francisco.
Do you prefer the more quiet mood of a vacation spot on the coast of Italy, France or Spain? Sausalito is the California version of many of those places.
If you want the night life of the Big City, visiting clubs, going to the theatre etc. then you should stay in San Francisco for at least part of your honeymoon.
Insiders Tip: The last ferry in each direction departs relatively early in the evening, and if you’re driving back and forth all the time it’s better to stay in The City (as locals call San Francisco.)
If the pre-wedding madness has left you preferring a small coastal town rather than the Big City, Sausalito is an easy choice.
If most evenings you want a more laid-back environment with a choice of great restaurants with dramatic views, then Sausalito also works very well. There is no club scene here but there are several places where live music is performed most nights.
If you love great views a Sausalito hotel may also give you “more view for less money.”
If you’re thinking “a couple of days in San Francisco, a day or two in Sausalito, a couple of days hiking the GGNRA, a day in the Wine Country” then Sausalito is going to be your perfect honeymoon home base.
