Davey Jones Deli
Fast Forward SummaryTM: We are eternal optimists who always expect great new things to happen in Sausalito. That wish came true a couple of years ago when Davey Jones, a resident of the Sausalito Floating Homes community, took over this routine deli inside the Bait Shop Market and brought with him a commitment to creating a great place to get food. We knew something was up when our readers started sending us messages that a new gem had somehow appeared on the scene "out of nowhere."
The Bait Shop owner ought to be going to saying a prayer of thanks to Davey Jones every night when he or she goes to bed, because the arrival of this deli has fundamentally changed the community's view of that facility.
Jones has taken a sandwich counter we once declined to include on our comprehensive restaurant pages and turned it into a success, first earning a spot on our Best Sandwiches list and then on the very competitive Best Lunch Restaurants list and Best Casual Restaurants List. Lest you think that is not an accomplishment, there are about 65 restaurants in Sausalito in any given recent year. Making a Top 10 against very high quality competitors isn't easy, and the average quality of all Sausalito restaurants, already high, has risen even further the last four years.
They do everything their own way here (as reading the menu shows) -- even a standard turkey sandwich eschews the typical thin deli slices for chunks of white meat, the kind I'm used to having the day after Thanksgiving when I take the best of the leftovers and make myself a great sandwich.
This is a natural stopping point for bike riders coming south from Mill Valley since it's the northernmost deli in Sausalito. Having an easy-going sandwich crew that enjoys talking with guests fits in with a nice relaxing ride, which is why one of our editors says, "This is a top three sandwich spot, not just a top ten."
Insiders Tip: After you order your sandwich at the deli counter you'll pay for it at the mini-mart cash register. Making a bee-line for the checkout after you order may avoid time wasted in line on the mini-mart side standing behind eleven people buying beer, smokes and trash bags.
Green Menu Times Two: They'll do bike delivery to Sausalito offices with sandwich orders -- just call them by 10:00 AM for a noon delivery; there's a $30 minimum and they'll deliver earlier or later as well.

Something else that people should know about Davey Jones Deli? Disappointed that we have not done any a) Davey Jones' Locker jokes or b) Monkees references, because you (justifiably) expect us to stoop to the obvious in our below-the-map sections?
