Sausalito Delis and Sandwiches
Sometimes you just want a sandwich for lunch, and Sausalito has lots of good choices. The shoreline of Sausalito is dotted with public parks. If you have time on a nice day, take one of these sandwiches and go sit by the Bay to eat it!
Four places stand out in our minds when we think sandwich, and they sort out neatly from north to south so one will be close by:
Louie's Delicatessen and Coffee Shop -- Northern Sausalito at 2656 Bridgeway (next to Avatar's and Feng Nian). Louie's is a Mediterranean deli that draws a lot of lunch customers from the office buildings in northern Sausalito. That means repeat business, which tells you the sandwiches are good.
Sausalito Gourmet Deli -- 209 Caledonia St. (a block north of the movie theatre). Some locals swear this Mediterranean deli makes the best sandwiches in the area. Their shady little back patio is a great secluded place to eat lunch on a nice day. Nice selection of wines by the bottle as well as the usual fare.
Venice Gourmet Deli -- Downtown at 625 Bridgeway. Across the street from this fabulous Italian deli is a great view of San Francisco across the Bay, and during good weather the handful of tables in front are one of the best seats in all of Sausalito. They make really good sandwiches, despite being in the high-traffic visitor corridor which sometimes inspires cafes to settle for routine food. They have an "eclectic" mix of other items for sale, and a lot of interesting wines by the bottle.
Golden Gate Market -- Southern Sausalito: Old Town and Hurricane Gulch. 221 2nd St. (though everyone thinks of it as Bridgeway, the name changes right here), right at the spot where Bridgeway curves away from the Bay at the southern end of town. The little deli is in the back. For bike riders coming in over the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco this is the first place to stop for food and liquids, and there's a bench out front to sit on if you need to catch your breath.
