Fast Forward SummaryTM: Sausalito residents often argue about which local deli is the best... and for 40 years many locals have said this landmark spot is the answer. Although they have no tables inside, they have a fabulous view of the Bay and San Francisco and there are a few sidewalk tables in front. In nice weather it's one of the best seats in town. (You can also order the Venice sandwiches next door at Venice Pizzeria and eat at their inside or outside tables with the same fabulous view.) Wonderful parks where you can sit and eat your sandwich next to the water are scattered nearby if their tables are full.
Every summer thousands of Sausalito visitors hunt for an "impulse lunch," and Venice Gourmet stands out as one of a handful of gems in the prime visitor zone: a place with really high quality food at the same prices other places charge for cheap ingredients, and even when the line is long they maintain very friendly service. As a result it's a popular lunch place year-round for people who work in the area, and a spot where you might run into one of the OurSausalito.com editors as we're grabbing a sandwich. (Look for that smiling, athletic, good-looking person ordering at the counter. That must be one of us!)
This is the kind of deli where you can order several different kinds of salami -- not to mention other Italian delicacies -- for your sandwich. With certain kinds of meats they may volunteer that they have a variety of cheese you haven't thought of that would taste great with your sandwich, all for the same price. Their sour french rolls are real San Franciscio style sourdough baked locally.
While you wait for your sandwich they have an eclectic selection of wines and kitchen gadgets to look at... if you can tear your eyes away from the view.
