Le Garage
Don't Get Lost: Le Garage can be a little hard to find -- the Google Map below will help you sort it out. (This is a byproduct of the hastily developed shipyard road map at the start of World War II -- Le Garage sits where the record was set for speed in building merchant vessels for the Navy's supply lines.) After you turn right onto Spring St. from Bridgeway, take the first right onto Liberty Ship Way. The road will round a curve and then fork -- take the road closest to the water, the left choice at the fork. (Liberty Ship Way is the name of both the left and right fork of this intersection, hence the confusion.) You'll enter the Schoonmaker Harbor parking lot after passing a long gray building on your left that has slanted 2nd floor windows. Park in the fenced lot with the "Parking for Le Garage Bistro" sign and walk towards the Bay. Le Garage is at the far end of the building you just drove past, right next to the water. You can also use satellite view and zoom in close in the Google Map below and see Le Garage's exact location -- the satellite even shows the tables on the patio!
Fast Forward SummaryTM: Le Garage is The French Restaurant in Sausalito, and they do a good job of being "The" French place. If you want to order in French, this is the place to come -- all the servers who have helped us have been fluent. Their Kobe Beef burger is fabulous. Le Garage really does have a roll-up garage door and concrete floors in the restaurant, and in nice weather the outdoor patio is a wonderful place to dine. Real French food from a real French chef (what a concept!) in a lovely harbor-view setting in the Schoonmaker office complex. On the high end in terms of price, despite the casual atmosphere. They also have a great selection of goodies to go with your morning coffee (to the delight of people in nearby offices), but be sure to get there often because the bakery treats do sell out a high percentage of the time.
Insiders Tip: If it's not a sweltering hot day, bring a sweater or arrive early to ensure a seat in the sun. The breeze kicks up at the edge of the Bay, and if they have both of their (le) garage doors open the wind tunnel effect can make it chilly inside.
Google Map Instructions: Use the "+" and "-" buttons to zoom in and out, the arrow keys to scroll the map, and the SAT button to see the satellite view.
