Twice each year we survey a wide range of blogs, travel sites, ratings sites and online forums, then create this ranking of Sausalito restaurants. You can click here for How to Read our Restaurant Charts, and we have a separate page for Sausalito’s Best Cafes, Deli’s and Diners.
Scores are more important than rank, since many places have similar scores and the curve can produce a swing of a point or two on each survey. A restaurant may rise or fall by five to ten slots based on a small score change — don’t interpret these shifts as necessarily representing long term trends, since they often “even out” on the next survey.

For Perspective: When we started this list in 2008 the top restaurant got a 100 rating on the “curve”, and restaurant #30 scored a 60. Today the #30 position on the list earns a score of 82 using similar methods, a score that would have ranked in the #14 position in 2008! Quite simply, the Great Recession offered restaurants two choices: improve or die. Every restaurant on the list above rates as being at least “Good” on any standard scale, which was not true in 2008 before the Recession.
Summer Effect: We’ve noticed that in the summer the crowds create longer waits at downtown Sausalito restaurants, which increases the number of complaints about them on the Net. If a downtown Sausalito restaurant shows a drop in its score in summer this may be the reason for the change.
Note: Rankings vs. Winter, 2014 have been adjusted to reflect the closure of Rossetti Pizzeria (a perennial top-10 restaurant on the chart) and El Patio. The following restaurants (listed in alphabetical order) did not make the Top 30 or we were unable to gather sufficient data to rank them:
– Bio (Opened after survey completed)
– Burger King
– Panda Express
* Buckeye Roadhouse is near the Sausalito on / off ramp on southbound Highway 101 but has a Mill Valley address just beyond the Sausalito border. Since many visitors think of it as being in Sausalito we include it here. If you prefer a list restricted to zip code 94965 then subtract one slot from all the rankings below it.
** Pelican Inn is located in Muir Beach, which is over the hill from Sausalito but is part of our 94965 zip code. We added coverage of Muir Beach as part of our 94965 area in 2014.
You can click here to see How to Read our Restaurant Charts. The leading restaurant on our list will always receive a score of 100, and all other restaurants will be scored on that curve.
