The Gables Inn
The Gables Inn is a small, classy, romantic hotel created by assembling a set of four old buildings and remodeling them. One of the historic buildings was originally the first hotel in Sausalito, built in 1869. Many rooms have Bay views, a few have awesome views of the San Francisco skyline, and many have fireplaces. The Gables Inn is located just up the hill from the center of downtown Sausalito, on Princess St. one block up from Bridgeway. This puts you within walking distance of the Ferry pier and most Sausalito attractions listed on this site.
Rooms include free wi-fi, and for guests they have free bottles of water and supplies of coffee and tea for the Keurig-style brewers in the rooms. Breakfast is not offered, although multiple excellent spots are within a block or two away. Prior to extensive renovations several years ago the Gables Inn was listed as a B&B, but after the upgrades they had grown into a hotel. Not all websites have updated their listings to reflect this.
When we recently had some repairs done on our home we twice stayed at the Gables Inn for several days (we try to get personal experiences everywhere we can) and we had a wonderful time. We stayed in two different rooms on the two trips. Both had beautiful views of the Bay, one had a spacious deck with even nicer views. One of the rooms had a full kitchen, both had new jet-equipped tubs. There are no elevators in the old mansion or other buildings, but the staff were incredibly considerate in helping us with our luggage, always with a smile and never a complaint. There is limited parking, but only once across two separate trips did we have trouble getting a space immediately, and in that one case we were able to park there within a couple of hours.
Note: We pay full price when we stay or eat at local establishments. After 18 years of editing this website and volunteering in different roles in Sausalito, we have made friends in different places but work to have our pages not give preference to those businesses. We disclose any relationships, advertising or sponsorships with businesses if we have them.
Something else that people should know about The Gables Inn? Should the Gables Inn offer a Clark Bar to every guest? (If you’re not a classic movie fan you may have to look that Gables and Clark one up.) Does the main house have seven gables, or are there any green gables? (If you’re not a classic movie fan you may need to… Never mind.) Disagree with any of our suggestions? Please let us know!
