The Inn Above Tide
If you want the view out your hotel window to look like a picture postcard, this is your best bet in Sausalito… and maybe in the entire Bay Area. And we’re happy to say that the service at Inn Above Tide matches the view.
We recently stayed here for several days while some repairs were being done on our house, and it was one of the very best hotel visits I’ve ever had. We had just come back from a one-of-a-kind business trip to Italy where the client put us up in an elegant, secluded resort hotel above a beautiful beach. Yet after four days at the Inn Above Tide, we agreed that we’d choose Inn Above Tide over the Italian beach resort if we were given the chance to visit just one of them again.
The morning breakfast in the intimate common room had featured items for each of us, and we each approach breakfast menus differently despite our gastronomic unity at lunch and dinner. You can eat right there, or take one of the available trays and carry the precise items you’ve selected back to your room. Need help with that? No problem, they’ll deliver it for you.
In fact, almost anything you ask the front desk is no problem. The valets who park cars in the small, gated courtyard are never anything but delighted to help. Housekeeping earlier, later or not at all? No problem. Need advice on great Sausalito spots? They’re happy to help.
Right on the water next to the Sausalito ferry pier, the Inn Above Tide was converted from a high-end apartment complex and has 29 rooms and suites. Every one of them faces San Francisco Bay. Many offer a deck with teak furniture and a fabulous view, as well as fireplaces. This is a 100% non-smoking hotel. No on-site restaurant, but great places are nearby, and the hotel arranges in-room dining from a variety of restaurants.
Note: We pay full price when we stay or eat at local establishments. After 18 years of editing this website and volunteering in different roles in Sausalito, we have made friends in different places but work to have our pages not give preference to those businesses. I have served on a volunteer panel and have been a longtime friend of an Inn Above Tide team member, and believe that my comments here are not colored by that friendship. We disclose any personal relationships, advertising or sponsorships with businesses if we have them.
How romantic is it? One of our contributing editors proposed to his wife there!
Kayakers row by below, both ferry services‘ boats come and go on their way to San Francisco, and pelicans and herons can be seen nearby. Great views of Angel Island, Alcatraz and Tiburon as well as San Francisco and the Bay.
The hotel is located right in the middle of downtown Sausalito, directly on the water adjacent to the ferry pier. This puts you within walking distance of most Sausalito attractions listed on this site.
Rooms include free wi-fi, continental breakfast, an evening wine and cheese reception, flat screen TV’s, DVD players, oversized tubs, stereos with CD players and iPod docks, 2-line phones with voicemail, in-room binoculars, a morning paper, high end linens, robes and slippers, bottled water and fax & copy service.
