Wolfback Ridge

This is one of a series of pages on each of Sausalito’s Neighborhoods, with links to Restaurants, Hotels, Bus Stops and Activities in each area.

Wolfback Ridge is a small residential neighborhood of Sausalito on the west side of Highway 101. The remainder of the land within the Sausalito city limits west of 101 is part of a National Park, the GGNRA., although the unincorporated area of Marin City also lies west of the freeway.

If you drive down Highway 101 towards the Golden Gate Bridge, just before you reach the Robin Williams Tunnel you’ll see a house perched on a clifftop above the freeway. Most of the homes of Wolfback Ridge are not visible from the freeway, but that house shows where the neighborhood is located.

Like most of Sausalito, Wolfback Ridge is full of contradictions:

  • There are big expensive spec homes with great views of Angel Island and the North Bay.
  • There are super-expensive open lots at the top of Wolfback Ridge with beautiful 180-degree views, although most of them cannot see the skyline of San Francisco due to the contours of the hill. Some have been on sale for years at prices of $5 million an acre or more, and the owners can afford to wait for the right buyer.
  • There are smaller, less expensive homes whose owners bought them many years ago, before California land prices exploded.
  • As great as the views are, Wolfback Ridge spends far more time encased in fog than any other Sausalito neighborhood. It’s actually too high up on the hill to be part of the “banana belt” warm areas that run along the hillsides farther north. On totally clear days these are among the best views in Sausalito, but on the typical summer days where we have fog on the ridgetops but sun on almost all of Sausalito, these can be the worst view homes in town.

The Lord giveth and The Lord taketh away.
